The Gianormous Resolution

resolution = re-solution = solving again

And isn't that what we do, again, and again, and again, except that most of us don't really solve anything. We fail. We fail because we make a Gianormous Resolution that is difficult, if not impossible to keep.

Researchers say it takes 21 days to make a behavior into a habit. Knowing that, the smart thing to do would be to choose one little thing and focus on that for a month (may as well add in a few extra days in case the researchers were overly optimistic). Of course there would be success because the goal was so small, so easy - it hardly felt like a resolution at all. Then at the start of the next month, another small goal.

At the end of the year there would be 12 small goals met - 12 new habits firmly established. If the 12 habits are related to one thing - teaching, weight loss, becoming a more compassionate person -whatever; they add up to a rather significant accomplishment. Taken together those 12 small goals probably look a lot like that one Ggianormous  Resolution that has failed every year.

I can see the logic in this. In one year I could accomplish so much...and yet the draw of the unattainalble Gianormous Resolution is hard to resist...

Hi Rachel,
I really like that. You make it sound so much easier. Maybe I will set some resolutions after all.
Blessings for prosperous new year,
Carol
